Sports journalist Omogbeja honoured at Ondo anniversary awards

Veteran sports journalist Yomi Omogbeja has been recognised among 50 sports personalities, administrators, media organisations and institutions honoured by SWAN’s Ondo chapter. He described the award as both a surprise and a homecoming, citing his father’s former role on the Ondo State Sports Council.
Veteran sports journalist Yomi Omogbeja has described his recognition at the Ondo 50 Sports Icons Award as a “pleasant surprise” and a homecoming. Mr Omogbeja, editor-in-chief of Athletics Africa, was among 50 sports personalities, administrators, media organisations and institutions honoured by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria’s Ondo State chapter. The ceremony in Akure formed part of events marking the 50th anniversary of Ondo State’s creation.
In a statement to Premium Times, Mr Omogbeja said he was moved to receive the recognition despite living far from the state. He said it was heartening to be remembered while away from home. He linked the award to his family’s history in Ondo sports administration, recalling that his father had been an executive member of the Ondo State Sports Council in the 1980s.
That connection, he said, made the honour feel like a homecoming. Mr Omogbeja said the occasion was especially significant because he was recognised alongside figures including former Ondo governor Olusegun Mimiko and former Nigeria Professional Football League chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye. He has more than 30 years’ experience in sports journalism and leads Athletics Africa, which was launched in 2004 as a dedicated track and field news and events platform.
His work has included coverage of FIFA and Confederation of African Football tournaments, athletics championships and Olympic Games. His career has also included work with Nigerian newspapers and digital media organisations. The report said his contributions had earned him several distinctions, including a 2011 journalism innovation award.
In October 2025, he was inducted as a Fellow of SWAN and received the association’s Veteran Sports Journalist Award.
