The Calcutta High Court has extended an order requiring two police personnel to protect Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra during visits to her Krishnanagar constituency until November 30. The protection follows allegations of egg pelting and harassment, with related petitions due before a division bench later in November.

The Calcutta High Court has extended security cover for Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra during visits to her Krishnanagar constituency until November 30. A single bench led by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed that two police personnel be provided whenever Moitra enters the constituency. The order follows allegations that she faced egg pelting, mob attacks and other forms of harassment during earlier visits.

The court had first instructed the Superintendent of Police in Krishnanagar to provide the protection on September 1. Moitra’s counsel, Arka Nag, told the court that incidents had continued after that order during visits to the constituency. The judge also directed that Moitra’s petition be placed before a division bench presided over by Chief Justice Ravindra V.

Ghuge. The matter is to be listed before that bench on November 27. Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Majumdar told the court that the Chief Justice-led division bench had issued an order on September 23 in a public-interest litigation.

That order directed the High Court Registry to identify petitions involving egg-pelting incidents against individuals or public figures for listing on November 27. The latest direction keeps the two-person protection arrangement in place until November 30. The order is intended to prevent further egg pelting and harassment during the MP’s constituency visits, according to the court’s earlier direction.

The material available does not identify those responsible for the alleged incidents or report any arrests. It also does not record a final finding on the allegations. The case is scheduled for consideration alongside other petitions concerning egg-pelting incidents in West Bengal.
