California couple arrested after New York Times engineer is shot dead
Police arrested a 77-year-old couple after Jonathan McKinsey, a New York Times gaming engineer, was shot in a Dublin, California, sports-complex car park. A 77-year-old couple were arrested after Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old gaming engineer for The New York Times, was shot dead in a California city park, authorities said. McKinsey was killed on Saturday afternoon in a sports-complex car park in Dublin, east of San Francisco. Dublin Police Services said a nearby police sergeant saw him on the ground while witnesses pointed out the couple, who remained near the scene.
Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both from Dublin, were arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges. They were due to appear in court on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear whether either had a lawyer.
Court records show that McKinsey and the couple’s daughter, Candice Jang, had been married since about 2012 and had three young children. Their divorce case included a custody dispute, and a hearing had been scheduled for the week after the shooting. Jang had reported McKinsey to police in 2023 and later obtained a domestic-violence protection order after he was arrested in a child-abuse case.
McKinsey denied the allegations and sought his own protection order and more time with the children. McKinsey, who was transgender, also alleged that Chen had directed anti-LGBTQ+ slurs at him and one child. The New York Times said he joined the paper in 2023 and was director of engineering for New York Times Games.
