Centre clears MSP procurement of three Karnataka kharif crops

The Centre has approved the procurement of sunflower, green gram and soyabean grown in Karnataka during the 2026-27 kharif season at minimum support prices, according to the Union Agriculture Ministry. Union Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan communicated the approval to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on September 28, in response to Mr. Joshi’s request.

The approved quantities include 13,413 metric tonnes of sunflower, 38,250 metric tonnes of green gram and 1,15,500 metric tonnes of soyabean. The procurement will cover crops produced in Karnataka during the current kharif season. The decision follows concerns among farmers over the payment of proceeds from earlier purchases made under the minimum support price scheme.

In July, farmers held a day-and-night indefinite agitation in Hubballi seeking payment for green gram bought under the scheme. The protest was organised under the aegis of Raita Sena Karnataka outside the office of the Karnataka State Co-operative Marketing Federation in Vikas Nagar, Hubballi. Farmers from Byahatti, Kusugal, Sulla, Kiresur and Amaragol were among those who began the agitation.

Farmers from other villages later joined the protest. The agitation was linked to payments that had remained pending for six to seven months, according to the supplied report. The Centre’s approval specifies the quantities of the three crops eligible for procurement at MSP.
