Chinese rubbish collector turns down modelling agencies to stay with family
A 20-year-old woman from eastern China has gained online attention after a model discovered her runway potential in videos from the rubbish station where she works. She has appeared in fashion shows and brand campaigns but has declined full-time agency offers to remain with her boyfriend’s family.
A 20-year-old rubbish collector in eastern China has attracted online attention after her modelling potential was discovered by self-taught model Lu Xianren. Known online as Chaoren Leng, or “Superman Leng”, she helps manage her boyfriend’s father’s rubbish collection business in Taizhou, Zhejiang province. Videos of her work drew attention to her height and appearance.
Leng is 1.81 metres tall and weighs 50kg. Lu, who became known for posting catwalk videos from rural areas, described her as a born supermodel and began offering runway advice and introductions to modelling opportunities. She made her runway debut at the SS26 Fashion Source event in Shenzhen last November and has worked with carmaker CHERY and luxury art brand Zhu Bingren Copper.
She has nevertheless declined offers from several modelling agencies. Leng chose to remain with her boyfriend’s family, which supported her after a difficult childhood and helped her complete secondary education. She left school at 15 after her grandfather died and later worked in several jobs.
She says rubbish collection provides a livelihood while modelling is a dream, and believes the two paths do not conflict. She is continuing to practise her walk, head turns and poses while maintaining her work at the refuse station.
