Five miners killed in ambush at Plateau mining site

At least five miners were killed and two others injured after gunmen ambushed them at a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Saturday. The attack occurred at about 1pm while the miners were carrying out what community sources described as legitimate activities. The incident has left residents mourning and renewed concerns about safety in the area.

Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed that five people died and two sustained injuries. He described the attack as a painful development and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect communities. A community member, Simon Mundat, also described the incident as devastating.

He appealed to the authorities to strengthen security so residents could work without fear. As of the time of filing, efforts to obtain official confirmation from security agencies had been unsuccessful. Calls and messages to Plateau police spokesperson Alfred Alabo were not answered.

In a related development, community member Danat Noel said security personnel and local hunters repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Latok community in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly withdrew after a swift response.
