Congress has named candidates for one Graduate and two Teacher constituencies in Maharashtra’s Legislative Council election. The five-seat polls are scheduled for October 23, with nominations due by October 6 and withdrawals by October 9, as the Maha Vikas Aghadi discusses its wider contest strategy.

The Congress has announced candidates for three constituencies in the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council election, which will fill five vacant seats, The Hindu reported. The biennial polls are scheduled for October 23 and cover three Graduate constituencies—Aurangabad, Pune and Nagpur—and two Teacher constituencies, Amravati and Pune. Congress named candidates for one of the Graduate seats and both Teacher seats.

The party renominated sitting MLC Abhijit Wanjari for the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency. Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar, described in the report as a member, was named for the Pune Division Teachers’ seat. Congress selected newcomer Aditi Pohare for the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.

The candidates were announced in a party release issued on Friday, according to the report. The schedule sets October 6 as the deadline for filing nominations and October 9 as the date for withdrawals. The five seats are vacant, although the report also identifies members connected to three constituencies who are retiring on December 6.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi has announced plans to contest the election. A meeting earlier in the week was attended by Congress leader Naseem Khan, NCP (SP) leaders Shashikant Shinde and Harshwardhan Patil, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. The alliance’s discussions covered the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’ constituency, the Pune Graduates’ constituency and the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.

The report said NCP’s Satish Chavan, NCP (SP)’s Arun Lad and Shiv Sena’s Kiran Sarnaik are retiring from those respective seats on December 6.
