CPI calls for rehabilitation package for Kochi apartment residents

The Communist Party of India has demanded an immediate rehabilitation package for residents of the P&T Apartment Complex in Mundamveli, West Kochi, who are holding an indefinite protest over alleged deplorable living conditions. A delegation led by CPI district secretary N. Arun visited the complex on Tuesday and expressed solidarity with the protesting residents.
Arun said the party had raised concerns about shortcomings during the construction stage. He called for residents to be relocated without delay and for a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged structural deficiencies behind the crumbling and leaking apartments. Arun said those found responsible should be punished and fined, with the proceeds distributed among affected families.
He described the conditions as evident and said the residents deserved a rehabilitation package with better terms. The visit followed controversial remarks by former Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA K.J. Maxy about the affected families.
Maxy had accused residents of benefiting from an LDF government housing project before changing their political position after a change in the State government. Maxy has withdrawn the statement, but residents are seeking an unconditional apology. The CPI(M) district leadership issued a clarification and reaffirmed solidarity with the residents.
Arun described Maxy’s comment as inappropriate and said the issue should not be viewed through political affiliations. The CPI said it would support the residents in their protests and legal battles. Other members of the delegation included CPI State council members K.N.
