Guinea-Bissau stun Nigeria with 3-0 AFCON qualifying win

Guinea-Bissau secured a 3-0 victory over Nigeria in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L match at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau on Tuesday. The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino Djú. Renato Nhaga played the ball into the area, allowing Djú to send a left-footed shot past Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria created an opportunity to equalise before half-time. Alex Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé made a save to preserve the home side’s advantage. Guinea-Bissau continued to threaten after the interval and doubled their lead in the 65th minute.

Mama Baldé collected a pass from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the net. Nigeria attempted to change the direction of the match in the 75th minute, introducing George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi. The changes did not produce a response on the scoreboard.

Ilenikhena came close to reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé made another save to deny the Nigerian forward. Guinea-Bissau completed the scoring in stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló received a through ball from Tamble Monteiro and finished with his right foot.

The defeat follows Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their previous Group L match and leaves the Super Eagles with work to do in the qualifying campaign.
