Guinea-Bissau defeat Nigeria 3-0 in AFCON qualifying setback

Nigeria suffered a 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Tuesday, a result that leaves the Super Eagles with little room for error in Group L. Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Djalo scored for the hosts at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau. The defeat was Nigeria’s first in the qualifying series, following a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute when Djú finished an attack. Nigeria struggled to impose itself during the first half as the hosts threatened on the counterattack. Baldé missed an opportunity to extend Guinea-Bissau’s advantage in the 37th minute, while Djú came close to scoring again before the interval after moving past three Nigerian players.

Nigeria began the second half with greater urgency. Moses Simon and Moses Usor combined to create an opening, but Usor’s effort was not strong enough to trouble goalkeeper Fernando Embadje. Simon later tested Embadje after meeting a header from Usor, but Nigeria could not turn its improved spell into an equaliser.

Guinea-Bissau doubled its lead in the 66th minute through Baldé. Nigeria made further attacking substitutions but failed to respond. Djalo added a third goal in stoppage time to complete a valuable victory for the hosts.

Tanzania, a co-host of the 2027 tournament, already has a place at the finals. Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the group’s remaining automatic qualifying spot. Guinea-Bissau opened its campaign by defeating Tanzania 2-0 and has strengthened its position in the qualification race.

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will co-host the 2027 tournament.
