Delta orders urgent repairs to eroded East-West Road section

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed Julius Berger Nigeria to begin remedial work on a collapsed section of the Federal Government-owned East-West Road at Agbarho. The failure followed heavy rainfall and erosion, disrupting a route used by commuters, traders and businesses across the Niger Delta.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to begin immediate remedial work on a collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area. The state Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, announced the directive in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday. He said the intervention followed the failure of the Federal Government-owned road after heavy rainfall caused erosion at the affected location.
Although the road is federal infrastructure, Aniagwu said Oborevwori was concerned about the hardship facing motorists, residents and businesses using the corridor. The governor therefore instructed Julius Berger to intervene and repair the failed portion. Aniagwu said the decision reflected the state administration’s approach of responding to urgent infrastructure problems according to residents’ needs rather than limiting action by institutional boundaries.
The commissioner described the East-West Road as a major economic corridor in the Niger Delta. According to him, the route connects communities and supports the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services. The collapse has the potential to affect commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses along the route, Aniagwu said.
He added that the remedial work was expected to improve traffic movement and reduce the difficulties caused by the damaged section. The commissioner said the Delta government would continue working with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners on infrastructure challenges affecting residents and economic activity. He urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the affected area while the repairs were under way.
