Makinde urges Nigerians to preserve unity amid security challenges

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called for national unity and respect for democracy and the rule of law during the state’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration. He said Nigeria’s diversity should strengthen rather than divide the country, while highlighting his administration’s reported progress in security, infrastructure, education and other sectors.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to nation-building while confronting insecurity and other national challenges. Makinde made the call on Thursday during the state’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan. He was represented at the event by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal.
Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” the governor said Nigeria’s independence was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of its founding leaders. He urged citizens to recognise that history by acting responsibly. Makinde said the anniversary should also prompt sober reflection on challenges facing Nigeria and Oyo State.
He said independence had taught Nigerians to govern themselves through democracy and the rule of law, which he described as essential to effective self-government. The governor said unity was indispensable to Nigeria’s progress. Referring to the country’s more than 250 ethnic groups, he urged citizens to view diversity as a source of strength rather than division and to continue living together peacefully.
Makinde also listed what he described as achievements of his administration since 2019. He cited progress in education, security, sports, business and infrastructure, including roads, hospitals and the Light Up Oyo State programme. On security, he pointed to the establishment of the Amotekun Corps and its collaboration with other security agencies.
He said infrastructure projects had been distributed across the state’s five zones. The celebration included a march past, cultural displays and prize presentations. Government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries attended.
