Governors across several Nigerian states have called for unity, peace, patriotism and accountability as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. In separate messages, they reflected on Nigeria’s development since 1960 and urged citizens to contribute to national progress despite continuing challenges. Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf asked residents to reject violence, intolerance, division and criminality, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
He called on political actors, community leaders and citizens to support peace and security, obey the law, protect public property and pay legitimate taxes. Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, described independence as an opportunity to renew commitments to self-reliance, human dignity and shared prosperity. He highlighted planned support for young people, entrepreneurs and farmers, including loans, grants, rural roads and agricultural mechanisation.
Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, stressed unity across religious and ethnic lines, as well as respect for the rule of law and democratic principles. He cited progress in education, security, healthcare, infrastructure and business in the state. Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas announced a ₦2.5 billion package for vulnerable households, young people and crisis-affected communities.
He also announced mercy for 24 inmates, a ward-level development programme and plans involving teachers’ welfare and the use of water resources for livelihoods. He directed authorities to publish an accessible statement of the state’s verified debt position. Other governors highlighted security and investment in Nasarawa, a technology-focused development vision in Ekiti, and executive clemency for 101 inmates and convicts in Kogi.
The governors’ messages combined appeals for national responsibility with accounts of programmes in their respective states.
