Five Indian nationals aboard a Kuwait-flagged tanker were safely brought ashore after the vessel was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, India’s Embassy in Oman said. The embassy said it coordinated the rescue of the crew members aboard MT Kazimah III and thanked Omani authorities for their support during the operation. It did not report injuries among the five Indians.
The vessel is a crude-oil tanker sailing under Kuwait’s flag and was travelling towards the port of Lomé in Togo, according to the information released by the embassy. The incident comes as India monitors the safety of its nationals working on commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on September 29 that more than 4,500 Indian seafarers were aboard commercial vessels operating in the area.
That figure included 163 Indian seafarers on 12 active cargo ships, according to the ministry information cited by The Hindu. The embassy’s statement did not identify who fired the projectile or provide further details about damage to the tanker or the circumstances of the strike. It said only that the five Indian nationals had been shifted ashore safely.
