Flipkart says its logistics arm, Ekart, has expanded nationwide storage capacity by 50% by adding 14 million cubic feet of warehousing space ahead of the festive shopping season. The company has also added delivery hubs, increased processing capacity and created more than 250,000 direct and indirect opportunities.

Flipkart has expanded the warehousing capacity of its supply-chain and logistics arm, Ekart, by 14 million cubic feet ahead of its Big Billion Days sale and the wider festive season. The company said the expansion increased storage capacity by 50 per cent nationwide. Technology and automation upgrades have also lifted peak processing capacity by more than 30 per cent, it said.

Ekart has added more than 900 delivery hubs to increase last-mile reach and support larger volumes of same-day and next-day deliveries. The additions come alongside more than 8,200 fulfilment centres, sortation hubs and last-mile operations. Flipkart also said it operated nearly 1,200 Flipkart Minutes micro-fulfilment centres across more than 150 cities.

More than 2.5 crore units from small sellers, weavers and artisans have been placed in Ekart fulfilment centres ahead of the sale. The company has opened 70 pick-up stations in key seller hubs, saying the move would reduce fulfilment time for micro, small and medium enterprises and other sellers. Hemant Badri, Flipkart Group’s senior vice-president and head of supply chain, said customers in Leh and Kargil would experience Big Billion Days for the first time.

Flipkart said it had created more than 2.5 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities for the festive season. Nearly 75,000 were for first-time workforce entrants, while about 60 per cent of the new opportunities were in last-mile delivery.
