Musa Francis James and Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo won the men’s and women’s races at the fifth Abeokuta 10km Race in Ogun State. James finished in 30:25.33 and Akanbi in 35:00.69, with each receiving $1,000. The event organisers highlighted equal prize money and the race’s growing platform for athletes.

Musa Francis James and Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo won the men’s and women’s titles at the fifth Abeokuta 10km Race in Ogun State on Saturday. James completed the men’s race in 30:25.33 to claim the $1,000 first prize. Ilya Raymond finished second in 30:38.06 and received $750, while Gyang Sunday placed third in 30:47.00 and won $500.

Akanbi took the women’s title in 35:00.69, also earning $1,000. Bulus Mary Jah was runner-up in 35:58.71 for $750, and Nwantiyi Teyei Davou finished third in 36:03.09 to receive $500. The race brought together athletes, fitness enthusiasts and residents for the fifth staging of the event in Abeokuta.

It was organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, with support from the Ogun State Government and sponsors including Phlo, Bet9ja Foundation, 7UP and Aquafina. James said he was pleased that his preparation had produced a victory and thanked the organisers for providing athletes with an opportunity to compete. Raymond and Gyang also said they were satisfied with their performances and praised the platform created by the event.

Akanbi said winning the women’s race was particularly rewarding after her preparation. She also commended the organisers and expressed hope that the competition would continue to expand. Nilayo managing director Yetunde Olopade said the organisers were pleased with the quality and enthusiasm shown by participants.

She thanked the state government, sponsors, partners and residents for supporting the event. National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade highlighted the equal first prizes for men and women, saying such arrangements should be encouraged. Presidential media and public communication adviser Sunday Dare praised the organisers and Abeokuta residents, saying the event showed Nigeria’s potential to stage high-quality sporting competitions.
