FRSC urges campaign drivers to obey road rules and avoid overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged political parties, candidates and supporters to observe traffic regulations during campaign activities in Gombe State. The appeal was made by the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Samson Kaura, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. He said campaign participants should avoid reckless driving, excessive speed and dangerous overloading.

Kaura said political parties should ensure that drivers attached to their campaign convoys obey road-use rules. He particularly warned against speeding in built-up areas, where children and animals could cross roads unexpectedly. According to the sector commander, reckless driving during campaigns could cause road crashes, injuries and deaths.

He said members of the public retained the right to use roads safely regardless of political activities taking place around them. Kaura also warned political parties and other motorists against driving under the influence of substances. He said substance abuse could impair vision and reduce reasoning ability, increasing the risk of crashes.

Drivers caught abusing substances on the road, he added, would face penalties prescribed by law. The FRSC has begun sensitising political stakeholders in Gombe State as part of efforts to promote responsible driving throughout the campaign period. Kaura urged parties to educate their drivers and ensure that only properly licensed motorists operate campaign vehicles.

He also cautioned against overloading, including situations in which supporters climb onto vehicles or are carried beyond their safe capacity. Such practices, he said, could increase the number of casualties if a crash occurred.
