Glare from Tirusulam LED display adds to GST Road safety concerns

A large LED display installed at Southern Railway’s Tirusulam ticket counter complex is raising road-safety concerns among motorists travelling along the GST Road, according to commuters and local residents. The display is located below the flyover on the road from Meenambakkam towards Tambaram. Motorists said the screen’s sudden brightness, particularly as it switches to a white display, can distract drivers approaching the signal.
Jayaram, a street vendor in the area, said a woman and her child recently fell from their vehicle after being distracted by the display. He said they suffered minor injuries. Motorists suggested reducing the screen’s brightness or replacing it with a conventional hoarding.
Southern Railway officials said the installation had been approved according to norms, but added that its brightness would be reduced in view of public-safety concerns. Traffic police said they would coordinate with the Railways on road safety. The LED display is one of several problems reported along the busy stretch.
Commuters also cited vehicles travelling in the wrong direction, haphazard parking and pedestrians crossing the GST Road to reach Tirusulam Metro station despite the availability of a subway. Some Metro commuters said the subway required a considerable detour and called for skywalk or escalator-friendly connectivity between Tirusulam Railway Station and the Metro station. Further south, motorists described sudden turns by heavy vehicles near the Pallavaram flyover and chaotic movement at the GST Road-Acharya Thulsi Road junction.
They said U-turns, reversing vehicles and vehicles cutting across the intersection made the signal ineffective during peak hours. Road bottlenecks also continue near Pallavaram, Chromepet Railway Station and Tambaram Sanatorium. Activists and motorists called for greater coordination among the Highways Department, Southern Railway and Tambaram Corporation, and urged faster road-widening work.
Some activists also proposed an elevated corridor towards Chengalpattu via Kilambakkam as a long-term measure.
