HSBC names Hong Kong stablecoin RedCoin for PayMe launch

HSBC has named its planned Hong Kong stablecoin HSBC RedCoin and says it will initially be made available through PayMe and the bank’s Hong Kong mobile banking app. The service is expected to launch before the end of the year, beginning with personal and merchant payments before expanding to corporate uses.
HSBC has named its Hong Kong stablecoin HSBC RedCoin, paving the way for its planned launch to users of the PayMe mobile payment service and the bank’s Hong Kong banking app. The bank said the stablecoin is expected to launch before the end of the year. It will initially be offered only through those two HSBC platforms.
HSBC said it would introduce RedCoin in phases, beginning with everyday transactions such as person-to-person transfers and person-to-merchant payments. A second stage will extend its use to wholesale and corporate banking, although no timetable was provided for that expansion. The bank said PayMe has more than 3.3 million users.
HSBC is optimistic about retail adoption, citing a survey of more than 1,000 customers in which 74% recognised at least one potential use for stablecoins. Digital-asset trading and tokenised investments were the most recognised use, selected by 57% of respondents. Person-to-person transfers were identified by 53%, while cross-border remittances and merchant payments each received 52%.
The survey also found that 60% of respondents could correctly define a stablecoin as a fiat-backed digital asset. HSBC said misunderstandings remained, including the belief among 26% that stablecoins are issued by governments. About 10% thought they would pay interest, which is not allowed under Hong Kong’s regulatory framework.
HSBC said it would provide an education programme focused on scam prevention and redemption. Maggie Ng, HSBC Hong Kong’s chief executive, described RedCoin as a natural extension of the bank’s activities and said the launch was intended to support financial innovation with security and simplicity.
