More than 3,000 people were caught for allegedly misbehaving with or sexually harassing women in public places in Hyderabad during September, police said on Thursday. The city’s SHE Teams detained 3,068 people, including 2,955 adults and 113 minors, according to the Women and Child Safety Wing. The action was intensified during the festive period at temples, procession routes, bus stops, metro stations, markets and other crowded locations.
Police said plain-clothes personnel and video surveillance were used at crowded areas, transport hubs and entry and exit points. The alleged conduct included stalking, obscene comments, unwanted physical contact and other forms of harassment. A total of 106 petty cases were registered during the month.
Police said five cases resulted in imprisonment of up to seven days and a fine of ₹1,050. Another 40 people were fined the same amount and ordered to perform social service for up to five days, while 61 others were fined ₹1,050 each. Authorities said 961 people were counselled, warned and released after preventive action.
A further 2,001 cases were pending disposal. Deputy Commissioner of Police Lavanya NJP urged women facing stalking, threats, abuse or other harassment to report incidents promptly. She said early complaints could help prevent repeat offences.
The Women and Child Safety Wing also warned against fake online profiles and excessive sharing of personal information. It advised users to employ strong, unique passwords and activate two-factor authentication. Incidents can be reported by calling 100 or through the SHE Teams WhatsApp helpline at 9490616555, police said.
