India’s tennis team ended the 2026 Asian Games without a medal after Sumit Nagal lost to China’s Wu Yibing in the men’s singles quarter-finals. The result ended a run of podium finishes dating to 1990 and marked the country’s first medal-less Asian Games tennis campaign in four decades.

India’s tennis campaign at the 2026 Asian Games ended without a medal after Sumit Nagal lost to China’s Wu Yibing in the men’s singles quarter-finals on Thursday. Nagal, the seventh seed, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes in Nagoya. His defeat eliminated India’s final remaining hope and confirmed the country’s first medal-less Asian Games tennis campaign since 1986.

India had won at least one tennis medal at every edition since 1990. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won mixed doubles gold, while Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan took men’s doubles silver. Nagal had advanced by defeating South Korea’s Hong Seong-chan 6-4, 6-0 and Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin 6-3, 6-2.

Dhakshineswar Suresh reached the third round before losing to Chinese Taipei’s Chun-Hsin Tseng. India’s two men’s doubles teams also fell in the quarter-finals. Yuki Bhambri and Dhakshineswar Suresh lost to Chinese Taipei, while top seeds N Sriram Balaji and Anirudh Chandrasekar were beaten by China after a deciding match tie-break.

The women’s doubles team of Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale lost in the opening round. India’s mixed doubles pairs also failed to progress to the medal rounds. India had no women’s singles entry, leaving the country without a podium finish in any tennis event at the Games.
