Indian Army chief calls for sharper intelligence operations in Kashmir

Indian Army chief General Dhiraj Seth has called for constant vigilance and more effective intelligence-led operations to address emerging terrorist threats in Jammu and Kashmir. He made the remarks during a visit to forward areas in north and central Kashmir, including Kupwara and Budgam, on September 25. According to the Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information, General Seth visited Rashtriya Rifles sector headquarters under the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps and reviewed operational preparedness for counter-terrorist operations.

He was briefed on the security situation and measures intended to detect, deter and respond to terrorist threats. The Army said he praised personnel for their professionalism, commitment and operational readiness. General Seth urged the forces to maintain vigilance, strengthen intelligence-led operations and retain the ability to respond quickly and precisely to changing threats.

He also stressed the importance of coordination with other stakeholders to improve situational awareness and the wider counter-terror response. During the visit, commendations were presented to soldiers for gallantry and exemplary service. The Army chief emphasised maintaining operational focus while ensuring a coordinated and calibrated response that protects the local population.

The review comes amid what the Army described as heightened counter-terror operations in central and north Kashmir. The supplied report said the Army had earlier this month killed a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander identified as Yasir, described as a Pakistani national, during an operation in the forests of Yusmarg in Budgam district. The Army said forces continued to focus on the Pir Panjal range and adjoining forest corridors, including efforts to eliminate hideouts and prevent infiltration.

The ADGPI said the Army remained committed to countering terrorism, strengthening coordination and maintaining a secure environment.
