Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission will hold a world press conference and national stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday as preparations for the 2027 general elections enter the final 100-day countdown. According to a statement by INEC chairman Joash Amupitan’s spokesperson, Adedayo Oketola, the commission will provide updates on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures intended to protect the integrity of the electoral process. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m.
at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. INEC said it was designed to promote transparency, public communication and cooperation among the main participants in the election process. Expected participants include political party leaders, security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, diplomats, development partners, civil society organisations and election observer groups.
Disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives are also expected. Attendance will be by invitation. Accredited media representatives and other guests will be required to show invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
INEC said the event would be broadcast on major national television networks and streamed on its official social media platforms. The commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are set for February 6.
INEC has published a final list containing presidential candidates from 18 political parties, including President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. The report said Amupitan, who became chairman in 2025, will oversee his first major nationwide election in the role.
