Jenna Forrester won the 400-metre individual medley at Australia’s short-course championships in Sydney in 4:28.39, lowering a 17-year-old national record. Flynn Southam also won the men’s 100m freestyle, while Olivia Wunsch claimed the women’s 100m freestyle title.
Jenna Forrester set an Australian record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney, winning in 4:28.39. The 23-year-old lowered Ellen Fullerton’s 17-year-old national mark by 0.33 seconds. Her time was also inside the qualifying standard for the short-course world championships in Beijing.
Forrester had earlier finished second to Iona Anderson in the 200m backstroke, with both swimmers going under the Beijing qualifying time. Forrester said she had little short-course experience and had not expected the record. She has already won three individual gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in the 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley.
She also won bronze in the 400m freestyle and silver in the 400m individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships. Flynn Southam won the men’s 100m freestyle in 45.61, beating Ed Sommerville by 0.45 seconds. Southam, who withdrew from the 200m freestyle to focus on the event, said he was looking forward to the world championships.
Olivia Wunsch won the women’s 100m freestyle in a personal-best 51.72, finishing 1.46 seconds ahead of Lani Pallister. In the men’s multiclass 50m freestyle, Rowan Crothers equalled his national record to beat Alex Tuckwell.
