Karnataka CM promises broad development push in Chamarajanagar

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has promised comprehensive development of Chamarajanagar district, with a focus on economic, educational and social empowerment, during a function in Kollegal. The chief minister launched developmental works for the Kollegal and Hanur Assembly constituencies on Wednesday.

He said a previous Cabinet meeting had sanctioned works worth ₹3,000 crore for the district and that the Congress government had since formulated additional programmes and laid foundations for several projects. Shivakumar said more than 25 projects had received foundation stones in Hanur. He also said the government had issued a ₹120 crore work order for comprehensive development of lakes under the Suvarnavathi irrigation project.

Other measures mentioned by the chief minister included funding for groundwater development in Hanur, canal works near Chamarajanagar and irrigation works costing ₹450 crore in Gundlupet taluk. Shivakumar said a proposed ₹490 crore irrigation project intended to address Hanur’s drinking-water needs would be discussed by the Cabinet and relevant committees.

He said approvals from the boards would be required before tenders were invited and construction could begin. He also responded to a demand to rename Chamarajanagar University as Dr. B.R.

Ambedkar University, saying the proposal would be placed before the Cabinet for consideration. Ministers including Chamarajanagar district in-charge minister C. Puttarangashetty, Kollegal MLA A.R.

Krishnamurthy and Hanur MLA M.R. Manjunath attended the function. Shivakumar described the district as agriculturally important and highlighted its cultural and religious sites.
