Karnataka proposes neighbouring States’ cultural tableaux for Mysuru Dasara

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has proposed inviting neighbouring States to present tableaux showcasing their traditions during the Mysuru Dasara procession. He also said the State had sought an air show and armed-forces participation, while plans include performances by Tibetans settled in Bylakuppe and representatives of the Kannada film industry.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has said tableaux from neighbouring States may join this year’s Mysuru Dasara procession as part of a proposed change to the way the festival is organised. Speaking to reporters on October 3, Shivakumar said the respective State Governments would be asked to showcase their cultures and traditions during the event.
He said the proposal reflected the links between Karnataka and its neighbours through water, migration and the supply of vegetables. The Chief Minister said he had invited the Chief Ministers of southern States to attend the festivities and was in contact with them to confirm their participation. He also expressed confidence that an air show would be held during Dasara, saying he had asked the Defence Minister to consider the State Government’s proposal.
The Defence Ministry had additionally been requested to send armed-forces personnel to participate in the procession. Shivakumar said such participation could motivate young people and help inculcate discipline. He also instructed officials to give Tibetans settled in Bylakuppe, near Periyapatna, an opportunity to present a cultural performance.
Film stars, including upcoming actors and actresses, are expected to participate as well. Shivakumar said the Kannada film industry would be represented and that the Chamber of Commerce had agreed to support the initiative. The Chief Minister also addressed Karnataka’s drought situation, saying 207 of the State’s 240 taluks had been declared drought-affected.
He described conditions as the worst in 150 years and said a Central team had arrived to assess the situation, with three teams expected to tour different parts of the State.
