Lagos police discipline inspector over remarks in viral video

The Lagos State Police Command has begun disciplinary action against Inspector Osumah Frank after a video circulated online showing him making controversial ethnic and political remarks while travelling in a public vehicle. The command identified the officer in a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi. It described the remarks as careless, inappropriate and uncultured.

In the video, Frank, who was wearing police uniform, was heard speaking about Igbo people and the political ambitions of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi. He also referred to President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. The officer was additionally heard suggesting that police officers could collect money to frustrate a political candidate’s chances of succeeding.

The video had circulated widely on social media from about September 23 and drew criticism, particularly over the ethnic comments and the suggestion involving police officers. The command said Frank made the statements in his personal capacity. It stressed that they did not represent the views or official disposition of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.

Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai said officers were expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times. He said wearing police uniform carried a responsibility to protect the dignity and integrity of the Force. The command said it would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the police into disrepute or weakening public confidence.

It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and policing with humility and integrity. The statement did not specify the disciplinary measures being considered against Frank.
