Man jailed over crash that killed former partner after domestic violence order breach

Rolong Stanley has been sentenced to five years in prison for the aggravated dangerous driving death of his former partner, Justine Hammond, near Orange in New South Wales. Stanley pleaded guilty over the February 9, 2025 crash on Lake Canobolas Road. He was given a non-parole period of three years and seven months, expiring on May 12, 2029.

The court heard that Stanley had been drinking cask wine with Hammond at an apple orchard before driving a Holden Rodeo. He lost control when the vehicle’s tyres hit the nature strip, then rolled, struck an embankment and crashed into a tree. Hammond suffered fatal injuries to her head, abdomen, chest and neck and died at the scene.

Stanley was taken to Westmead Hospital, where testing found his blood-alcohol concentration was four times the legal limit. Judge Penny Musgrave said Stanley should not have been with Hammond or drinking. He was subject to an apprehended domestic violence order prohibiting contact with her or being within 500 metres, and an Intensive Correctional Order banning him from drinking.

The court also took into account that he was driving an unregistered vehicle with a defect notice while disqualified from holding a licence. Earlier offences included being armed with intent, assault causing bodily harm and possessing ammunition without a permit. Hammond’s sister, Adrienne Hiko, told the court that Stanley’s conduct showed a complete lack of regard for human life.

The judge said his breaches of court orders increased the seriousness of the sentence.
