Modi marks Ashok Singhal centenary by recalling his organisational role

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to former Vishwa Hindu Parishad international working president Ashok Singhal on the occasion of his birth centenary, describing him as an “organisational genius”. In an opinion article, Modi recalled his interactions with Singhal and said the VHP leader had played a pivotal role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Singhal was born on September 27, 1926, and died on November 17, 2015.

Modi wrote that Singhal worked on projects involving lengthy journeys to remote areas and took an active interest in people on the margins of society. He also recalled Singhal’s involvement in relief efforts after natural disasters, including the 2001 Kutch earthquake. The prime minister highlighted Singhal’s work in organising international Hindu gatherings.

He cited a 1993 VHP convention in the United States marking the centenary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address, and a World Hindu Conference held in Port of Spain in 2000. Modi also recalled Singhal’s participation in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, including his address at a 1991 Boat Club rally. He attributed the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in part to the efforts of leaders such as Singhal.

The article said Singhal believed social harmony and brotherhood should be reaffirmed. Modi pointed to his support for honouring members of marginalised communities and described these actions as expressions of that belief. Modi called on young people to learn about Singhal’s life during the centenary year and to renew their commitment to what he described as Singhal’s goals for the country and its people.
