The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed a technical team to Port Harcourt to support the response to flooding that affected parts of Rivers State. NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar activated the team, led by the agency’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman. The team was tasked with assessing the situation and assisting people affected by the disaster.
According to a statement issued by NEMA on Friday, the officials inspected some affected areas after arriving in Port Harcourt. They subsequently delivered relief items approved by the agency for immediate assistance to residents affected by the flooding. During a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Government at Government House, Usman presented the items and conveyed Umar’s concern and sympathy to the government and people of the state.
Usman said the deployment was intended to provide coordination and technical support for ongoing response efforts by the Rivers State Government and other relevant stakeholders. He added that the supplies were provided by the Federal Government through NEMA to complement the state’s efforts to ease conditions for affected people. Receiving the team on behalf of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu thanked NEMA for what she described as timely intervention and support.
She said the relief materials would be distributed carefully to ensure they reached the intended beneficiaries. The supplies were later handed over to the Rivers State Head of Service, Inyingi Brown, who inspected them at a warehouse in Port Harcourt. NEMA said the operation formed part of its continuing collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders to improve coordinated disaster response and provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
