Nigeria’s DisCos collect N205.53bn from July electricity billings

Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies billed customers N250.79 billion in July 2026 and collected N205.53 billion, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. Collection efficiency improved from June, but billing efficiency declined and performance varied sharply among the distribution companies.
Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies billed N250.79 billion in July 2026 and collected N205.53 billion, according to the latest factsheet from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. The 11 DisCos received energy valued at N333.94 billion during the month, meaning that 75.10 per cent of the energy received was billed to customers. NERC said billing efficiency declined by 1.14 percentage points compared with June.
Collection efficiency, however, improved. The DisCos collected 81.95 per cent of the value billed, an increase of 2.25 percentage points from the previous month. Performance differed considerably across the companies.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company recorded the highest collection efficiency at 94.67 per cent, followed by Port Harcourt at 84.95 per cent and Benin at 79.15 per cent. Kaduna recorded the lowest collection efficiency at 39.71 per cent. Jos followed with 46.27 per cent, while Kano recorded 55.41 per cent.
Kano had the highest billing efficiency at 85.37 per cent, followed by Port Harcourt at 82.34 per cent and Eko at 78.63 per cent. Yola had the lowest at 61.55 per cent, while Kaduna and Jos recorded 64.08 per cent and 68.51 per cent respectively. The figures leave a substantial gap between electricity received, billed and collected.
The report linked Nigeria’s billing difficulties to metering gaps, which have led many DisCos to rely on estimated consumption. It also said poor supply, infrastructure problems and grid collapses continue to affect the sector. Power Minister Joseph Tegbe has said the government would prioritise metering, transparency, distribution and sub-national participation.
He said consumers should be able to track sector performance through a public dashboard.
