The Nigerian Army has operationalised three new infantry battalions in Zamfara State as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve its operational coverage. The newly activated units are the 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura, the 23 Infantry Battalion in Kaura Namoda and the 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka. The Army said their deployment would improve rapid response and help secure the battalions’ respective areas of responsibility.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General B.P. Koughna, was represented at the ceremonies by the Acting Commander of 1 Brigade, Colonel Joseph Umaru. Umaru reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to operations aimed at protecting law-abiding citizens.
He said lasting peace required coordinated action by the military, other security agencies, traditional institutions and residents. He urged people in Zamfara to provide timely, credible and actionable intelligence to security agencies. He also instructed the newly deployed troops to maintain discipline, professionalism and operational vigilance while observing established rules of engagement.
The emirs of Bakura, Anka and Kaura Namoda welcomed the establishment of the battalions. Alhaji Bello Sani, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad and Major Dr Sanusi Mohammed Ahmed Asha (rtd) described the deployment as an important step towards restoring peace and safety. The traditional rulers pledged the support of their institutions, particularly through community mobilisation and information sharing with security agencies.
The Army said the new units were intended to enhance its ability to operate across the state.
