Nigerian named in India probe into $330m drug seizure

Indian authorities have linked a Nigerian national to an alleged international trafficking network after seizing 526kg of methamphetamine and heroin from an Iranian vessel in the Arabian Sea. Five Pakistani nationals were arrested, while investigators continue examining the Nigerian’s alleged role.
A Nigerian national has been identified by India’s Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad as an alleged intermediary in an international drug trafficking network following the seizure of narcotics valued at more than $330m. The Gujarat ATS and Indian Coast Guard seized 526kg of drugs from an Iranian boat on September 25. The consignment reportedly comprised 400kg of methamphetamine and 126kg of heroin.
According to reports, intelligence about a meeting between the Nigerian and a wanted Gujarat-based suspect in Ahmedabad prompted the ATS to alert the Coast Guard. The vessel was later intercepted northwest of Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea. Investigators allege that the network was associated with Pakistan-based suspected trafficker Haji Salim.
They said the drugs were intended for Punjab and other parts of northern India, after being transferred from the Iranian vessel to a fishing boat and moved through Indian waters. Five Pakistani nationals aboard the vessel were arrested. Authorities also reportedly found a Starlink device, which they believe may have been used to communicate with handlers in Pakistan.
The investigation remains under way, including efforts to establish the Nigerian’s specific role and identify other suspected participants.
