Possible Xi-Trump-Putin meeting at Apec remains uncertain

Analysts say a meeting between the leaders of China, Russia and the United States at next month’s Apec summit in Shenzhen is possible but would require agreement on a common agenda. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described a meeting with Xi Jinping as potentially productive.
A possible meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump at next month’s Apec summit remains under discussion, according to analysts cited by the South China Morning Post. Putin said in a National Day message to Xi that a meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum would be productive and strengthen the countries’ partnership. Trump is also expected to attend the summit, which would be Putin’s first Apec meeting since 2017.
Kremlin foreign-policy aide Yuri Ushakov previously said the possibility of a trilateral meeting had been discussed. Renmin University researcher Liu Xu said the likelihood remained high, partly because China and the United States were expected to hold several meetings this year. Tsinghua University analyst Sun Chenghao cautioned that attending the same summit did not mean the leaders would hold a formal trilateral meeting.
An informal conversation would require less preparation than a summit with a defined agenda. Analysts said China could use its position as host to facilitate communication between Washington and Moscow. They added that any meeting would require realistic expectations and an area of common ground, particularly as Russia remains in confrontation with much of the West over the Ukraine war.
