NLO Cup switches to regional home-and-away league format

Nigeria’s Nationwide League One has redesigned its NLO Cup as a regional home-and-away league, replacing the previous single-match knockout structure. The organisers say the change will guarantee clubs more fixtures, strengthen player development and improve commercial prospects. The competition is scheduled to begin on October 10, 2026, with participating clubs paying a ₦1m fee.
Nigeria’s Nationwide League One has announced that its revamped NLO Cup will use a regional home-and-away league format, replacing the previous single-match knockout arrangement. The new structure is intended to guarantee clubs more competitive fixtures and provide players with greater exposure. The number of matches will depend on the size of each regional group.
A team in a 10-club group could play as many as 18 matches, with more possible in larger zones. NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo said the format was designed to address the shortage of playing opportunities and create a more sustainable competition for participating clubs. He said the expanded schedule would allow teams to host more matches in front of their supporters and gain experience from away fixtures.
The NLO also expects the arrangement to support youth development, fan engagement and stronger links between clubs and their host communities. To limit travel and logistical demands, several clubs may use the same venue for home matches. Fixtures may be scheduled on weekdays or weekends, according to the league.
Ogunnowo said the revised competition would give coaches more time to develop their teams and allow players to demonstrate their abilities in a structured environment. He added that home-and-away matches would expose players to both the support of home crowds and the pressures of travelling for away games. The NLO Cup is due to start on October 10, 2026.
Eligible clubs from NLO Division One and the NLO Youth League Under-19 must pay a non-refundable registration fee of ₦1 million. The league said the money would cover tournament logistics and must be paid into its designated FCMB account, with proof submitted to the secretariat for registration clearance.
