Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress has criticised Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate for 2027, after he reportedly said he could not afford medication for his late mother. The APC questioned his suitability for office and accused him of seeking a return to government for access to public resources.

Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress has criticised former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi after he reportedly said he could not afford medication for his late mother, Mary Oduah Amaechi, Premium Times reported. The party’s statement was signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka. It followed comments attributed to Mr.

Amaechi linking his financial difficulty to the hardship caused by President Bola Tinubu’s policies. His mother died in July at the age of 89. Mr.

Amaechi is a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation. He is also the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections. The APC began its statement by expressing sympathy over Mrs.

Amaechi’s death, but then questioned how her son’s reported circumstances could be reconciled with his long career in public office. It referred to earlier remarks attributed to him in which he reportedly said his wife was feeding him because he had become financially constrained. Mr.

Morka said the claims raised questions about Mr. Amaechi’s productivity outside government. The APC also suggested sarcastically that he seek employment in his hometown of Ubima in Rivers State.

The party accused Mr. Amaechi of seeking the vice presidency to regain access to public resources and described him as unsuitable for the position. It said executive office should not be treated as a means of personal financial support.

The statements were made in the context of the emerging ADC opposition platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The source material did not include a response from Mr. Amaechi or the ADC to the APC’s criticism.
