A brief interruption during Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech at a project launch in Andhra Pradesh has triggered a political dispute. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the crowd appeared to be expressing anger over jobs, while Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Sitharaman and ruling-party leaders said the gathering was enthusiastic and wanted to interact with its leaders.

A brief interruption during Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech at Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh has developed into a political dispute after a video of the incident circulated on X. Sitharaman was speaking in Telugu at the October 2 launch of the Global Horticulture Hub–Rayalaseema Rising project when people in the audience began shouting. The source material says the clip does not make clear what the crowd was saying.

Sitharaman asked the audience twice to listen, paused and stepped aside. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu then asked people to sit down and those climbing a railing to come down.

He said the Union Minister’s message about a programme intended to change farmers’ lives was important. He added that he and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan would come out after the event, when the audience could raise whatever slogans it wished.

Sitharaman resumed speaking after Naidu addressed the gathering for about 70 seconds. The clip, posted on Sunday, was accompanied by a claim that people had shouted, “give jobs first”. It had attracted more than six lakh views by evening.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reposted it, describing the episode as evidence of public anger and saying the Chief Minister had to silence the people. Naidu rejected that interpretation, saying the gathering’s reaction was an “overwhelming and enthusiastic response”. Sitharaman said workers of the Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena Party had wanted to interact with Naidu and Pawan Kalyan, and that the Chief Minister had told them the leaders would meet them after the programme.

Andhra Pradesh Information Technology Minister Nara Lokesh called the jobs-protest narrative false and accused Ramesh of sharing misleading information without verification. State BJP chief P.V.N. Madhav likewise said a routine interaction had been portrayed as an organised protest.

The competing accounts have left the meaning of the interruption at the centre of the dispute.
