NLO launches cup competition to give clubs more matches

Nigeria’s Nationwide League One will start a new cup competition on October 10 for clubs from Divisions One and Two. Participating teams must pay a non-refundable N1 million fee, while the regional home-and-away tournament will be livestreamed to increase players’ exposure to scouts and clubs.
Nigeria’s Nationwide League One has introduced a cup competition for clubs in its first and second divisions, responding to complaints that the existing league format provides too few matches. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10. Clubs that choose to participate must pay a non-refundable registration fee of N1 million, which the league says will cover match logistics.
NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo said the competition was intended to serve clubs with different financial capacities. The existing stadium-based league format will remain, while the cup will offer additional fixtures to teams able and willing to meet the extra costs. The tournament will use a regional home-and-away format.
Clubs may select their preferred home grounds, while nearby teams or those facing logistical difficulties may share facilities with approval from the NLO Secretariat. Participating clubs must submit proposed venues for zonal allocation and fixture planning. The league said the competition was not compulsory for all clubs, allowing teams to determine their level of participation.
The NLO also plans to livestream matches on its official platform. FutbalConnect will help connect players with scouts, agencies and clubs; SofaScore will provide live scores and performance data; and Zkyte Technologies will handle streaming and digital infrastructure. Clubs have been directed to update team rosters and player profiles for digital registration and broadcast coverage.
The league said the visibility could help international scouts assess players and improve clubs’ potential returns. Ogunnowo said the innovation had received encouraging feedback from clubs. The NLO is presenting the cup as a way to expand competitive opportunities while retaining the current league structure and recognising financial differences among teams.
