Odemwingie recalls Nigeria’s Olympic kit crisis in Beijing

Former Nigeria international Osaze Odemwingie has recalled how an administrative error left the country’s men’s Olympic football team relying on the Super Falcons’ kits during the 2008 Beijing Games. Speaking during a conversation with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade, Odemwingie said officials appeared to expect Samson Siasia’s squad to leave the tournament early. As a result, he said, the team’s main supply of playing equipment was sent back to Nigeria before the competition had reached its decisive stages.

Nigeria instead progressed beyond the group stage and advanced through the knockout rounds, leaving the players short of matchday clothing. Odemwingie said the team then turned to the women’s delegation for help. “At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” he recalled, according to Punch Nigeria.

He said the Super Falcons had not progressed to the same stage and had therefore left their kits available. The unusual arrangement was noticed by opponents. Odemwingie said players from the United States joked that Nigeria appeared to be wearing the same clothes repeatedly.

With limited alternatives, some members of the squad bought plain white T-shirts to vary their appearance. The clothing problem did not prevent Nigeria from producing a strong tournament. The team reached the gold-medal match, where it lost 1-0 to Argentina after Ángel Di María scored the only goal.

Odemwingie’s account presents the episode as an embarrassing but humorous part of a campaign that exceeded expectations. Nigeria’s silver medal remained the main outcome of the Beijing tournament, while the kit shortage became a lasting example of the logistical problems surrounding the team’s run.
