One worker dies as building collapses during demolition in Anambra

A 25-year-old man died after part of an old building collapsed during demolition in Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, according to the state police command. The deceased was identified as Bakeru Iwal, who police said was one of the workers at the structure. Preliminary information indicated that he was trapped when a section of the building suddenly gave way during the demolition.

Residents and eyewitnesses near the site said the structure was being brought down when the collapse occurred on Tuesday. The circumstances surrounding the demolition and the safety measures in place are now being examined by the authorities. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, said officers attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded after receiving a report of the incident.

They secured the area and began preliminary investigations. Ikenga said the scene had been documented and that Iwal’s body was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation. An autopsy and other necessary examinations are expected to be carried out.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and thoroughly. The inquiry is intended to establish how the collapse happened and whether anyone bears responsibility. The police urged members of the public to remain calm while the investigation continues, adding that further updates would be provided as necessary.
