Peter Obi promises monitored fuel subsidies ahead of 2027 vote

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has promised a transparent fuel subsidy system if elected in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Speaking at a town hall meeting with party members and supporters in Sokoto, Obi said any subsidy retained by his administration would be monitored so that it benefited Nigerians rather than becoming an avenue for corruption. He criticised the previous subsidy regime, alleging that corruption had weakened its impact and prevented citizens from receiving the full benefit of government intervention.

Obi said he and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, would create a system to track crude production, oil transactions, imports, exports and government revenue. “Kwankwaso and I will initiate a work plan” to establish the volume of crude, the nature of transactions and revenue from each oil and gas activity, Obi said, according to Punch Nigeria. He presented transparency in the sector as central to restoring confidence in government.

Obi also accused the governing All Progressives Congress of worsening poverty and hardship and failing to provide adequate infrastructure and interventions. The claim was made as part of his broader criticism of the current administration. On infrastructure, he promised to expand rail transport and connect Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara with other parts of the North-West and the country.

He also said an NDC government would prioritise agriculture, education, security and infrastructure. Obi said his administration would work with state governors to address banditry, kidnapping and terrorism. He also pledged fertiliser subsidies and other support for farmers to increase food production.

Kwankwaso criticised the APC over insecurity and economic difficulties in the North-West and urged residents of several states to demand improved security and greater economic opportunities. Obi and Kwankwaso later visited Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III to seek his blessings ahead of the election. The NDC’s Sokoto governorship candidate, Shamsuddeen Haido, urged party members to remain committed and mobilise support.
