Kadiri Town police in Andhra Pradesh have arrested a 38-year-old man accused of targeting elderly people and stealing their gold ornaments, officials said. The arrest of B. Bhargava, a native of Hindupur who was living in Karnataka, led to the resolution of 13 cases registered at eight police stations, according to Sri Sathya Sai district Superintendent of Police S.
Satish Kumar. Police recovered 140 grams of gold valued at about ₹20 lakh and a two-wheeler. The recovered items included four chains, 11 rings and an earring.
Kumar said Bhargava was arrested during vehicle checks at a checkpoint in Kadiri. He alleged that the suspect approached elderly people on roadsides and near temples, befriended them and praised their gold rings. According to the police account, Bhargava would ask to examine a victim’s ring, claiming that he wanted to have a similar one made for his father.
He would then allegedly flee on a scooter after receiving the item. In some cases, police said, he snatched rings directly from victims’ fingers. The superintendent also accused Bhargava of taking gold chains from devotees during the Kadiri temple festival.
In a separate case in Nallacheruvu, he allegedly threw bathroom-cleaner liquid at an elderly woman’s face before stealing her earring. Police attributed 10 cases to five stations in Sri Sathya Sai district, two to Anantapur and one to Annamayya district. They have begun searching for a suspected accomplice, identified as Narasimhappa of Rayadurgam.
The allegations have not been tested in court.
