A group of literary figures, including writer Allam Rajaiah, visited the memorial museum of anthropologist Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf and his wife, Elizabeth, at Marlavai in Telangana’s Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. The visitors discussed the couple’s research and the village’s Adivasi heritage and history.

A group of literary figures visited the memorial museum of Austrian anthropologist Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf and his wife, Elizabeth, at Marlavai in Telangana’s Kumram Bheem Asifabad district on Sunday. The visitors included writer Allam Rajaiah. According to a press release, Rajaiah and other members of the group garlanded statues of the Austrian couple, who lived in Marlavai during the 1940s while conducting field studies and research.

Speakers at the visit said Haimendorf’s research and reports contributed to understanding the Raj Gond and other Adivasi communities. They also said his work influenced discussions about policy relating to Adivasi rights, education and development. The event also focused on the history of tribal rights movements.

Speakers referred to the fighting spirit and sacrifice of Kumram Bheem in the struggle for Adivasi rights over Jal, Jangal and Zameen — water, forest and land. Rajaiah presented a copy of his novel on Kumram Bheem to Marlavai sarpanch Kanaka Pratibha, the press release said. The supplied material does not provide the title of the novel or details of its publication.

Villagers briefed the visiting team on Marlavai’s history, the cultural heritage of Adivasi communities and the legacy of Haimendorf and Elizabeth. The museum visit therefore brought together literary figures, local representatives and residents around the village’s historical and cultural associations. No new institutional initiative or government announcement was reported from the visit.

The account centred on the memorial, the anthropologists’ research and the continuing importance of Adivasi history and rights in the area.
