Police in Rivers State have arrested a man identified as Seth after his father was allegedly macheted to death in the Pipeline area of Rumukwurushi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The state police command said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motive for the reported killing. The suspect is in custody, according to the command.
A neighbour told PUNCH that the suspect, who was said to be in his 20s, allegedly attacked his father at home. The neighbour said the suspect’s mother, a teacher, had gone to work when the incident occurred. According to the account, the woman returned to find the house in disarray.
She initially thought her husband was asleep, but sought help after noticing the condition of the home. People who came to inspect him reportedly found that he had died. The neighbour said the suspect locked the room where his father was and remained inside.
Vigilante members and police officers were called, forced the door open and allegedly found the suspect with bloodstains on his hands. The source said he admitted killing his father. PUNCH reported that the victim suffered several injuries, including injuries to his neck.
The neighbour said the father had confronted his son several times over his alleged consumption of a hard liquor known as Ice, which was said to have caused tension, although the immediate trigger for the attack was unclear. The police spokesperson, SP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the arrest. “The suspect in question has been arrested, while investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Agabe said.
The allegations have not been tested in court. Police did not announce any charge or provide further details about the next steps in the investigation.
