Segun Johnson says spontaneity defines his performances

Singer Segun Johnson has said spontaneity is central to his performance style and the identity of his entertainment brand. Speaking to Saturday Beats, Johnson said he created hype lines naturally on stage rather than relying on rehearsed routines. Although he once considered preparing his expressions in advance, he decided that doing so would undermine the quality he wanted to present.

“I was intentional about being spontaneous,” he said. “I believe that way, my brand as an entertainer can be authentic, natural and unpredictable.” Johnson said the difference between simply performing and creating lasting memories was the ability to notice unusual or significant moments during an event. He argued that such moments could be brief, but that an attentive performer could develop them into highlights.

“Sometimes, such moments last for just 15 seconds during a two-hour performance,” he said. The performer, he added, must be alert enough to recognise and maximise them. His performances are physically demanding, and Johnson said he completely disconnects after an event.

He said he does not want to listen to the radio, take calls or engage socially while recovering. “I switch off completely,” he said, describing the break as both physical and mental. Johnson also rejected the idea that his creativity would run out.

He said he believed his creativity came from God and was not based on a fixed repertoire. He linked that belief to his decision to build his brand around improvisation. For Johnson, not having a strict plan allows his performances to develop naturally and gives him the freedom to respond to events as they unfold.

The singer’s comments present spontaneity not simply as a performance technique, but as the foundation of the public identity he has developed as an entertainer.
