Sisters describe alleged upskirting incident during Manchester night out

Sisters Georgia and Alex Scholes say two men filmed up their dresses after following them near Manchester’s Spinningfields. Greater Manchester Police arrested two men on suspicion of voyeurism; both were later released on bail while enquiries continued. The sisters have criticised the normalisation of such behaviour and responses to it.
Two sisters have described an alleged upskirting incident during a night out in Manchester as a serious violation. Greater Manchester Police said two men had been arrested on suspicion of voyeurism. Georgia Scholes, 25, and Alex Scholes, 22, said they had left a restaurant in the city’s Spinningfields area when two men followed closely behind them up some stairs while filming.
Georgia said she noticed one man holding his phone unusually and realised he was recording. Georgia said she confronted the men and asked them to delete the footage. She told the BBC that one man shouted as another ran away, while she and her sister repeatedly sought to have the recording removed.
Alex said she removed her heels and chased one of the men. A bouncer intervened and stopped the other man, according to the sisters. Police said the men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested following the alleged incident on Deansgate on 19 September.
Both were released on bail pending further enquiries. Georgia said she asked passers-by for help but felt that nobody responded. She also criticised what she described as an initial question from police about whether she was sure the man had been recording her, saying it created doubt about her account.
The sisters said women should not be told that vigilance about their surroundings or drinking is the solution to behaviour of this kind. Alex said the incident was often minimised and that harassment should be challenged rather than accepted. The source material does not state whether charges have been brought.
The police investigation remains ongoing, with both arrested men on bail.
