SIT arrests one after video shows assault of girl in Bihar’s Kishanganj

The Bihar Police have arrested one of five identified suspects after a video showing the assault of a young woman and her male friend in Kishanganj district circulated on social media. A Special Investigation Team was formed after police received the footage late on September 24. The incident took place near Tulsiya Halt railway station, under Dighalbank police station, according to Kishanganj police.

The video shows a group of youths stopping a man and a woman travelling on a motorcycle, grabbing the woman and assaulting her. Police said their review of the footage indicated that eight or nine youths had surrounded the woman, while four or five were shouting at and physically assaulting her. One person is heard questioning the woman about having a Hindu male friend, police said.

Kishanganj Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar inspected the location with a police team and directed officers to accelerate action. Police identified five accused as Afsar alias Tajemul, Zubair Khan, Mizan alias Salman, Kamil and Shahzad, all described as residents of nearby villages. Shahzad, whom police identified as the prime accused, was arrested by the SIT.

Police said the other four suspects had fled to Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka and Punjab, and that raids were being conducted to locate them. Their details were still being verified. Police said the video appeared to be four or five months old and probably dated to May 2026.

The victim told investigators that she had gone to the railway station to meet a male friend when youths from nearby villages began harassing and assaulting her. According to police, a village-level panchayat had earlier been convened by the village head over the matter and the dispute had been settled locally. A case has now been registered on the basis of the victim’s statement.

The SIT, led by the Kishanganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer-02, has been tasked with identifying and arresting everyone involved.
