A six-year-old girl and a relative were killed after a speeding lorry hit them near Tank Bund in Hyderabad early on Sunday, The Hindu reports. Domalguda police inspector Amjad Ali identified the victims as Sarakshi, six, and Viswanath, also known as Viswanth, 41. Both were residents of Jonnabanda in Old Alwal.
Police said the accident occurred at about 2.30am during a family birthday outing. Sarakshi had gone to Tank Bund with her parents and elder sister. Viswanath, described by police as a colleague and relative of her father, had joined the group with his wife and two children.
The group had watched a film in Kukatpally before travelling to Tank Bund. They planned to cut a birthday cake near Hussainsagar, according to the police account. After parking their car, the family members began crossing the road towards Hussainsagar.
Viswanath was carrying Sarakshi and had reached the middle of the road, where he stopped to allow vehicles to pass before continuing. A lorry travelling from the direction of Secunderabad then struck the pair. Sarakshi died at the scene, while Viswanath suffered severe injuries.
He was taken to Gandhi Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment. The supplied report did not provide details of any arrest or further police action in connection with the crash.
