South Western Railway reports record September freight loading
South Western Railway handled 4.41 million tonnes of freight in September, its highest monthly total for that period and 5.9% above the previous year. The railway zone also reported higher revenue and passenger traffic, taking cumulative freight loading for April-September to 26.1 million tonnes.
South Western Railway recorded its highest-ever freight loading for September after handling 4.41 million tonnes during the month, according to a press release issued by the zone. The total was 5.9% higher than the 4.17 million tonnes loaded in September 2025. Cumulative originating freight loading between April and September 2026 reached 26.1 million tonnes, an increase of 5.8% over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Iron ore accounted for the largest share of September’s loading at 1.7 million tonnes. Pig iron and finished steel contributed 1.127 million tonnes, while coal accounted for 0.9 million tonnes. Mineral oil loading stood at 0.217 million tonnes and container traffic at 0.105 million tonnes.
In the first six months of the financial year, iron ore loading totalled 10.17 million tonnes, followed by pig iron and finished steel at 5.95 million tonnes and coal at 5.36 million tonnes. SWR reported gross revenue of ₹870 crore in September, up 15.91% from the same month last year. Passenger revenue rose 26.87% to ₹357.5 crore, while passenger traffic increased 6.83% to 1.5 crore.
Freight revenue was ₹465 crore, an 8.72% increase. Other coaching revenue rose 10.51% to ₹28.81 crore, and parcel revenue increased 10.35% to ₹15.89 crore. For April-September, gross revenue reached ₹4,730 crore, up 4.91%.
Passenger revenue stood at ₹1,904.10 crore and freight revenue at ₹2,546 crore. The zone carried 9.2 crore passengers, a 4.78% increase. General manager P.
