Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged residents to buy khadi clothing and village-made products to support spinners, weavers and artisans. His appeal ahead of Gandhi Jayanti highlighted self-reliance and local production, while noting that state khadi outlets are offering cotton, polyester and silk products at a 30% discount.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged residents to buy khadi clothing and village products to support the livelihoods of spinners, weavers and artisans. In a statement issued ahead of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Vijay said the occasion recalled India’s freedom struggle and the values of simplicity, self-reliance and humanity associated with Mahatma Gandhi.

He said Gandhi’s use of non-violence and emphasis on the spinning wheel taught Indians the importance of economic freedom and self-reliance. Vijay argued that buying khadi recognised a weaver’s skill, while purchasing village products respected artisans’ labour. He also said buying locally manufactured goods encouraged productive capacity within the state.

The Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board is combining traditional production with new designs and e-commerce platforms, according to the statement. The board’s outlets offer khadi cotton, polyester and silk products throughout the year. Vijay said the products were available at a 30% discount.

The chief minister appealed particularly to school and college students, government employees, private-sector workers and young people to use the opportunity to purchase khadi clothing and village products.
